Robert Cavelier de La Salle takes possession of Louisiana

A former priest turned explorer, the Rouennais Robert Cavelier de La Salle arrived on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and took possession of the lands located between the Mississippi and the Rocky Mountains.

He baptized them Louisiana, in honor of Louis XIV.

Coming from a family of wealthy merchants, La Salle was described as a “conquistador” and “new Cortés” during his lifetime.
