Off Japan an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale causes a tsunami that struck the coasts of East Asia and causes a severe nuclear accident at Fukushima (Japan).
Waves, some of which have reached 30 meters, have traveled up to 10 miles inland, destroying nearly 600 km of coastline and partially or totally destroying many cities and ports.
The tsunami has led to more than 90% of the 18,079 dead or missing and the Fukushima nuclear accident.
